BA (Honours) Photography
This is a theme-based program
to develop your potential for independent and self-motivated photographic
practice and to enable you to contribute to critical and professional debates
about visual culture. The course encourages a range of photographic genres
including: reportage, documentary, fashion, still-life, art-photography,
and 3D installation work. It has developed a successful blend of lectures,
projects, briefings, technical workshops, tutorials, and key visiting speakers
as well.
The Contextual Studies Program
is thematically linked to the practice elements of the course. Students
are also introduced to the broader media and cultural debates through a
Common Studies Program in which they share classes with film-makers, journalists,
and media studies undergraduates.
The program, which is one
of the most respected photography degrees in Europe, is based in central
London in the heart of the city's photographic media community.
Course Content
This is a three-year course,
and Study Abroad students are accepted for either year 2 or year 3.
Year 2
Students produce three in-depth
practice-based projects on the following themes: photography and society,
photography and identity, and photography as a commodity. Students attend
Contextual Studies lectures thematically linked to practice projects, and
are required to submit two 1,500 word essays. In addition, students attend
a Common Studies Program, producing three written assignments in response
to the lectures given.
Year 3
Students submit a written
major photographic project proposal. This is approved by a designated tutor
and developed into a substantial photographic project. The work is assessed
at the end of the year and forms part of an exhibition. In addition, students
complete 6,000-to-8,000 word dissertation.
