BA (Honours) Media and Cultural Studies

The rapid expansion of media industries and their incursion and incorporation into all aspects of society has led to the emergence of media studies as an academic subject in its own right. This ambitious course offers a study of the media, both as an industry and as a form of cultural expression. It seeks to integrate traditional academic studies of humanities and social science with new ways of looking at different cultural forms.

You will receive a foundation in the theory and history of media and culture and develop an understanding of media institutions, evaluating their impact on society.

The degree is taught in separately assessed courses divided into Main Studies; Applied Studies - a series of courses connected to the research, writing and production areas of media work; and Common Studies - a choice of lecture programs taught across the four undergraduate degrees in the School of Media. While the Main Studies are theoretical, there is also an important input of professional skills development, including public relations, production management, information technology, logistics of film and video production, radio production, screen writing, media research, and media law.
